This piece is made by selecting fabrics to create a picture. The fabrics are layered and sewn in place using free motion embroidery, a technique which uses my sewing machine as a drawing tool. Finishing touches and embellishments are made using hand embroidery. I have also added shells and coral which I collected on the beach to the foreground of the piece.
The Coral Strand is to be found out west of Galway on the way to Roundstone, on the Wild Atlantic Way. The beach is entirely made up of little pieces of what looks like coral, but is actually calcified seaweed, providing hours of beachcombing fun. On this occasion it was the stone walls that fascinated me and I wanted to create the layers and crags and crevices of the landscape in textiles.
