This piece is made by selecting fabrics to create a picture. The fabrics are layered and sewn in place using free motion embroidery, a technique which uses my sewing machine as a drawing tool. Finishing touches and embellishments are made using hand embroidery.
Old Head is found out on a headland down in Co Cork, not far from Kinsale. I was gifted this view every morning after a gruelling cycle up a steep hill. The beauty of it took what remaining breath I had, and I knew I wanted to create a textile artwork based on it. Being summer the verges were full of grasses and flowers and that is what I focussed on in this picture. I particularly love the little white flowers, which are stitched on by hand, and held in place with a delicate french knot.
