This piece is made by selecting fabrics to create a picture. The fabrics are layered and sewn in place using free motion embroidery, a technique which uses my sewing machine as a drawing tool. Finishing touches and embellishments are made using hand embroidery.
Howe Strand is a hidden gem nestled in the coast of West Cork, between Kinsale and Clonakilty. On holiday there in the summer we were only five minutes drive from this beach so it became our go to spot for a swim and play. It was at it’s best early in the morning, when I would stop off on the way home from a run for a quick swim… just me and the seagulls and the rolling waves. The building is an old, and now abandoned, coastguard station, and forms a dramatic backdrop to the beach. With this piece of textile art I wanted to recreate something of the sweeping shoreline as the tide went out.
